THE MISSING VERSE FROM THE NATIONAL ANTHEM

The Weekly Update – 14-07-2025.

On this July 14th, National Day in France, discover the stanza from La Marseillaise that was deliberately omitted:

You can find the recording on the Phare FM Christian radio replay link:

“Allons enfants de la patrie, le jour de gloire est arrivé…” (Let’s go, children of the fatherland, the day of glory has arrived).

In France , we all know the first verse of the Marseillaise.

There are 15 verses in all.

I’ve learned (to my great surprise!) that the 8th verse has been deleted.

Yes.

Deleted by a certain Joseph Servan, Minister of War in 1792.

He deleted the 8th stanza, because of its mention of God.

And yet, in many countries, from Iceland to South Africa to Switzerland, God is mentioned in the national anthem. And rightly so.

Let’s not be afraid to talk about God, to sing about God! This God who loves us and wants what is best for us.

So here are the words that were taken out from La Marseillaise:

“God of clemency and justice

See our tyrants, Judge our hearts

May your goodness be propitious to us,

Defend us from our oppressors

You reign in heaven and on earth

And before You, all must bow.

Support us with your arm.

You, great God, master of thunder.”
