This morning as Yukki and I were having our breakfast, my future father-in-law started singing “Amazing Grace” in Teochew, his native tongue.
Yukki’s father was born 77 years ago in Phnom Penh, Cambodia in a Chinese family.
He speaks Teochew, Mandarin and Cantonese (and also French, English and some Khmer from his childhood days in Cambodia).
He then followed with other Gospel songs in Chinese: ” I have decided to follow Jesus “, “What a friend we have in Jesus“…
We then got talking about how some songs and hymns in church can bring hope to those in the audience but also how they open hearts before the preaching of the Word.
Some songs (not all unfortunately) have this ability to prepare the hearts for the sermon.
How many times I have been helped as a preacher by what had been song before I got up to speak.
