LONG BEFORE THE REFORMATION…

The Weekly Update – April 14, 2025

It is in our church’s old lending library that I got my hands (After discovering where the key is!) on a gold mine: dozens of books that nobody seems to have touched for a long time.

And I came across a nugget entitled: ‘Il y avait des géants’ by Mme B. Decorvet: The authentic account of the believers in the Piedmont valleys. Long before the Reformation, these men and women tenaciously defended the Bible. Hunted, humiliated and tortured by the soldiers of the Roman Church, they did not deny Salvation by Grace alone.

The book reveals the exploits of those heroes of faith, starting with Pierre Valdo, a wealthy merchant from Lyon who discovered the truth of the Gospel as early as the 12th century. He translated the Word of God into the language of the people.

If I hadn’t read the book, I’d never have known of the heroism of these Protestants, whose faith was not shaken by the worst kind of persecution.

Our evangelical Christians today desperately need to hear about these valiant soldiers of the Cross.

PS: I’ve already found a second book in the old library: ‘The biography of Jean-Christophe Blumhard, a 19th century evangelist.’
