The Weekly Update – April 27th, 2026
Brennan, a former Franciscan priest and best-selling author of more than twenty books is one of the great giants of faith.
He comes against the religious system of today’s Church and invites us to a God of love and forgiveness.
Reading through his book ‘The Ragamuffin Gospel’ (published by Multnomah), I found gems on every single page.
Here are some extracts:
“ The institutional church has become a wounder of the healers rather than a healer of the wounded. It accepts grace in theory but denies it in practice.”
“ Jesus sat down at table with anyone who wanted to be present, including those who were banished from decent homes. In the sharing of a meal they received consideration, instead of the expected condemnation. A merciful acquittal instead of a hasty verdict of guilty. Amazing grace instead of universal disgrace.”
“ Every parable of mercy in the gospel was addressed by Jesus to His opponents: murmuring scribes, grumbling Pharisees, critical theologians, members of the Sanhedrin. They are the enemies of the gospel of grace, indignant because Jesus asserts that God cares about sinners, incensed that He should eat with people they despised.”
“ The sequence of forgiveness and then repentance, rather than repentance and then forgiveness, is crucial for understanding the gospel of grace.”
Brennan, like a modern-day prophet, challenges in his book the way believers think and how far from the gospel of Grace many Church leaders have gone to.
He points out to the sad reality that the question today has become not ‘What does Jesus say?’ but ‘What does the Church say?’ .
A broken man throughout his life and ministry, Brennan made it to the finishing line because of the finished work of Christ.
PS: In the French section of this website ( ‘L’ Info de la Semaine’ ,) you will discover another man of God who also came against the religious oppression of his time.
