“ I’M ALL ON MY OWN ”

The Weekly Update – November 2, 2026

Al Sanders , a well-known television personality, talks about the time he misdialled the telephone while trying to make a local call. As soon as he heard an elderly voice on the line, he realized that he had dialled the wrong number, apologized and prepared to disconnect, when the voice said: “ No, wait! I am 80 years old, and no one ever calls me. Would you talk to me for a minute?”

There are so many elderly people, living alone, with no one to talk to!

I’ll never forget that old lady I met one day in a care home in the Paris region. She shared:

‘I’m all on my own. My daughter doesn’t have time to come and see me. I’m utterly miserable. I’d like someone to support me. I’ve had a life full of suffering. I’ve felt like throwing myself out of the window.”

I believe that elderly people living alone – often forgotten by society and the Church – represent one of the greatest mission fields today.
