The Weekly Update – July 20, 2026
We are currently in the Book of Exodus as part of our daily Bible reading.
In the account of the first plague sent upon Egypt, Moses stands before Pharaoh and declares, “I will strike the water of the Nile with the staff that is in my hand, and it will be turned into blood.”
As I meditated on this passage from Exodus 7, I thought of Jesus’ first miracle in John 2, at the wedding in Cana: “The master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine…”
Exodus 7: Water turned into blood. John 2: Water turned into wine.
Exodus 7: First plague. John 2: First miracle.
Exodus 7: The curse of the Old Covenant. John 2: The blessing of the New Covenant.
The consequences are opposite: on one hand, the fish of the Nile died, the river became foul, and the Egyptians stopped drinking its water. (v. 18) On the other hand, there is wine for all the guests, and the disciples believe in Jesus. (v. 11).
What if Jesus had deliberately chosen, for His first sign, to turn water into wine in order to counteract Exodus’ the first plague?
By choosing Jesus, we leave behind condemnation and judgment to live in God’s miraculous presence.
A verse we proclaim every morning, taken from the First Letter of John:
“While the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”
