The Weekly Update –<\/strong> 14-07-2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On this July 14th, National Day in France, discover the stanza from La Marseillaise<\/em> that was deliberately omitted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAllons enfants de la patrie, le jour de gloire est arriv\u00e9<\/em>…\u201d (Let’s go, children of the fatherland, the day of glory has arrived).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In France , we all know the first verse of the Marseillaise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are 15 verses in all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve learned (to my great surprise!) that the 8th verse has been deleted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deleted by a certain Joseph Servan, Minister of War in 1792.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He deleted the 8th stanza, because of its mention of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yet, in many countries, from Iceland to South Africa to Switzerland, God is mentioned in the national anthem. And rightly so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s not be afraid to talk about God, to sing about God! This God who loves us and wants what is best for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So here are the words that were taken out from La Marseillaise:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“God of clemency and justice<\/p>\n\n\n\n

See our tyrants, Judge our hearts<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May your goodness be propitious to us,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defend us from our oppressors<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You reign in heaven and on earth<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And before You, all must bow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Support us with your arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You, great God, master of thunder.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
