When I got an email some weeks ago from George Verwer inviting me over to meet him at his home, I was very surprised.
George Verwer is one of the Christian leaders who has influenced me the most in my life.
George is the founder and former director of Operation Mobilisation, one of the largest mission’s organisation in the world. Over the decades he has probably challenged and sent out more Christians into mission than anyone else.
I took the Eurostar train from Lille, Northern France and headed to London. I took two more trains and finally made it to West Wickham. At 3pm I rang the doorbell. George invited me in and introduced me to his wife. He made me a nice English tea and we sat in the living room.
The whole house looked like one big mission base with papers, files and books everywhere.
The one and a half hour I spent with him will never be forgotten. A life changing encounter with an 80-year-old man who after ministering in 100 countries is still as passionate as ever for world mission.
I could not believe how simple his house (and his car!) were. A truly humble servant of God.
Before we left, he stood up in the middle of the living room and prayed for me.
He then kindly drove me to the train station and encouraged me as I now head back to Asia.
